NEW BOSTON — The Omen III.

Two plays to start Friday’s Southern Ohio Conference I game told Symmes Valley Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter what to expect.

“We had two steals on the first two possessions and missed layups. That’s not the way you want to start the game at New Boston,” said Carpenter.

Things didn’t get any better as the cold-shooting Vikings lost 58-43 to the New Boston Tigers.

The Vikings were 17-of-64 from the field for 27 percent and just 9-of-23 from the foul line for 39 percent.

“We had opportunities, we just didn’t put the ball in the basket,” said Carpenter.

New Boston connected on 8-of-14 shots in the first quarter to build a 19-7 lead. The Vikings took 16 shots but made only three.

The Tigers were 4-of-8 in the second quarter to the Vikings frigid 6-of-23 and the spread was 34-21 at the break.

Jacob Johnson scored 10 points and Hunter Boggs 9 to lead the Vikings (0-2, 0-1). Matt Tibbs and Chris Capper grabbed 10 rebounds each as the Vikings had 41 as a team. Tyler Smith handed out five assists and had four steals.

Josh Howell scored 17 points and Justin Bowling 11 for New Boston (2-0, 1-0).
