FLATWOODS, Ky. — There are cold shooting nights, and then there are nights like Monday.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers shot a mere 23 percent from the field in a 42-32 loss to the Russell Lady Red Devils.

Ironton was just 12-of-52 from the field including a disastrous third quarter when the Lady Fighting Tigers missed all 12 field goal attempts.

“We couldn’t get anything to drop. We couldn’t get layups to fall. When the shots wouldn’t fall, we started to get frustrated and we forced a lot of shots. We weren’t relaxed,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.

Ironton’s inability to make shots allowed Russell to set the pace of the game. The Lady Red Devils were 20-of-41 for 49 percent.

“They dictated the game,” said Graham. “They did whatever they wanted and forced us to do what they wanted. It was like that the whole game.”

A steal and layup by Alex Taylor gave Ironton a 2-0 lead, its only lead of the game.

Russell (4-1) ran off 13 unanswered points and it was 13-5 at the end of the quarter.

A layup by Mercedes Crockrel followed by Brea Tackett’s steal that led to a layup by Jessica Waddle got Ironton within 19-11. But Russell got a pair of jumpers by Kesley Simpson to lead 25-12 at the half.

Waddle sank three foul shots in the third quarter for Ironton’s only points and the Lady Tigers trailed 30-15.

The Lady Fighting Tigers finally caught fire early in the fourth quarter.

Crockrel got two steals and converted both into layups. Waddle hit a 3-pointer to make it 32-19.

Kayla Parsley made a layup for Russell only to have Crockrel drain a 3-pointer and Ironton trailed 34-25 with 4:39 to play.

But layups by Katrina Holmes and Samantha Sparks put Russell’s lead at 38-25 with 3:21 left and Ironton never got closer than the final score.

Crockrel had 13 points and seven rebounds for Ironton (3-2).
