Logan too much for Lady Tigers

When Ironton coach Doug Graham looked into the eyes of his Lady Fighting Tigers, he didn’t see blue, green, brown, or hazel. He saw fire.

Despite a 67-43 loss to the unbeaten Logan Lady Chieftains Monday night, Graham was pleased with the emotion of his team.

“We finally showed some emotion. We finally played with a little fire in our eyes,” said Graham.

“We may have had too much emotion. We need to control it, and that was my fault. But I was just glad to see it.”

Ironton’s emotions ran too high in the second half as the Fighting Tigers were called for an uncharacteristic three technicals including the first of Graham’s career.

Logan was 28-of-34 from the foul line including 16-of-19 in the fourth quarter.

Ironton (3-4, 1-3) shot well from the foul line, but the Lady Tigers were just 14-of-48 from the field for 29 percent. They were a mere 1-of-13 in the fourth quarter.

Logan took an 8-2 lead on the strength of 3-pointers by Carissa Bosch and Jeanna Reynolds.

A putback by Lorna Ceasar had Ironton down 11-6, but four free throws and a layup just before the buzzer by Collette Bolen gave Logan a 17-6 lead.

But Ironton bolted out of the starting gate in the second quarter with a 12-0 run sparked by Merecedes Crockrel with eight points in the spurt.

Jessica Waddle had a steal and found Crockrel inside for a layup at the 4:52 mark that put Ironton ahead 18-17.

The Lady Chieftains got a layup by Jessica Harris at the 3:08 mark to end the Ironton run and retake the lead. She hit two foul shots 28 seconds later and it was 21-18.

A layup by Crockrel cut the lead to 21-20, Harris had a layup and it was 23-20, and then Waddle hit a foul shot to and it was 23-21.

Katie Hoffman hit both ends of a one-and-one to give Logan a 25-21 halftime lead.

Two foul shots by Crockrel and a layup by Waddle tied the game to start the second half and Ironton lead 29-28 on a 19-footer by Crockrel with 5:24 on the clock.

A technical foul on Graham led to a pair of foul shots by Harris and Logan had the lead for good at 30-29.

Harris then hit an 18-footer and 3-point goals by Reynolds and Harris helped extend the lead to 38-31.

Brea Tackett’s steal and layup and Ironton within 38-33 before Harris made another foul shot with 27 seconds left and it was 39-33.

The Lady Chieftains scored eight unanswered points to begin the fourth quarter and used a 12-2 scoring run to lead 51-35 with 4:27 left.

Logan used excellent shooting by making 6-of-9 from the field to go with its foul shooting.

Crockrel led Ironton with 22 points and four rebounds. Waddle had 13 points and five rebounds. Both players had three steals.

Logan was led by Harris with 23 points and 13 rebounds. She was 15-of-18 at the line including 6-of-6 on technical free throws.
