WEST PORTSMOUTH — Good and better.
Alfie Bricker pitched a good game with a two-hitter, but Chesapeake’s Travis Zimmerman was even better with a one-hit shutout as the Panthers took a 1-0 win Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.
Zimmerman struck out nine and walked only one for the win. Bricker fanned 11 but issued seven free passes.
“Zimmerman pitched really well. We didn’t hit their guy well, either. It was a well-pitched game,” said Panthers coach Joe Waugh. “But we were able to scratch a run and we made some key plays when we had to.”
The Panthers had six errors, but Waugh noted “we spread them out to where it didn’t hurt us.”
With one out in the first inning West loaded the bases on three straight errors. But Zimmerman struck out the number four batter, a squeeze play failed for an out at home, and then Zimmerman struck out the next batter to end the game.
The only West hit was an infield single by Mark Murphy in the second inning.
The Panthers got the only run of the game in the fourth inning.
Matt Angle had an infield single to start the inning. He went to second on a balk and Bryon Huff walked. Kyle Rase hit into a force out at third, but the throw to second base caused the shortstop to fall on Huff who was awarded third base due to obstruction.
Phillip Mandt followed with a sacrifice fly to score Huff.
The Panthers (7-11) play at 5 p.m. Friday at Wheelersburg in the sectional finals.
