Now that’s how you celebrate Senior Night.

The St. Joseph Flyers paid tribute to their eight seniors before the game, and then the seniors completed the celebration by scoring five of the team’s goals in a 7-1 rout of the Greenup County (Ky.) Musketeers Thursday.

St. Joseph coach Dan Blair had nothing but praise for his seniors.

“I am proud of this group of seniors,” said Blair. “They have worked hard over these past four years. They are a talented group of young ladies and gentlemen.”

The Flyers’ seniors are Joey Basedow, Caleb Blackburn, Pat Gagai, Chad Harvey, Julie Haymond, George McCown, Katie Schwab, and Ian Simpson.

Simpson scored two minutes into the game on a cross from Harvey. Four minutes later, Basedow passed a ball through to Harvey who headed it into the net for a goal.

The Flyers scored again 12 minutes into the game as Simpson got his second goal as Harvey had another assist.

The Musketeers had a hand ball in the box which allowed Hammond to score off a penalty kick and it was 4-0.

Gagai scored an unassisted goal at the 30-minute mark and junior Sunni Clyse extended the lead to 6-0 when she scored off of a Greenup defender at the 35-minute mark.

In the second half, Basedow scored an unassisted goal at the 7-minute mark.

Greenup County avoided the shutout with a goal by Austin Newsome at the 32-minute mark.

Aiding the Flyers’ win was Joe “The Shoe’ Unger with four saves as he turned in another solid performance.

St. Joseph bounced back from a 2-1 loss at Portsmouth West on Wednesday. The Flyers had beaten West 12-2 in an earlier meeting.

George McCown had the Flyers’ lone goal.

“West was a much-improved team this time around,” said Blair.

The Flyers begin tournament play at 5:30 p.m. Monday as they host Portsmouth Clay, the team’s first-ever home tournament game.
