Ironton’s running game beats Westfall

The Ironton Fighting Tigers used a punishing ground game to outscore the Westfall Mustangs 41-31 Friday in the Region 15 Division IV quarterfinals at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

Ironton amassed 440 yards on the ground as all three running backs eclipsed the 100-yard plateau. Fullback Keith Wetzel ran 29 times for 156 yards and scored five touchdowns, Chance Freeman had 154 yards on 18 carries and a score, and Major Brice 106 yards on 10 carries.

The Fighting Tigers were 1-of-4 passing for 14 yards to give them 454 total yards.

After trailing 28-21 at the half, Ironton forced three turnovers in the second half and held the Mustangs to a 31-yard field goal by Cameron Puckett.

Westfall (8-3) had 459 yards total off with 387 coming through the air. The two teams combined for 913 total yards.

Quarterback D.J. Cain was 19-of-35 for 338 yards and two touchdowns. But he was intercepted twice in the second half and fumbled into the end zone to end a potential scoring drive.

Ironton (8-3) will play New Lexington next Friday at a site to be determined, possibly Jackson or Ohio University.
