Barnett medals add to museum

Last Sunday was a very busy and enjoyable day at the Lawrence County Historical Society Museum.
Jill Dean was present with her violin class and we enjoyed their music. Jeff Fields, with the help of his friend Lowell Mullins, presented the medals of Billy Barnett to our society for the addition to our Military Room.
We were honored with both having a good crowd attending as well as receiving the medals.
Today, we will be entertained by the piano and voice of Elizabeth Melvin from 2-4 p.m. Refreshments are available to the public attending.
Dec. 14, being the last Sunday of our season at the museum, we would like to remind everyone to come see the fossil which is shale rock and has a limestone formation that spells out the word “OHIO.”
This is placed in a glass case in the museum and is on loan from Nick McMahon. The stone was found near Ellisonville by Louis Roetting and was used for part of the Big Etna furnace. This is an opportunity to see this rock for the last time since it will be returned
to its owner. Come in and see it before it is removed.
It is getting close to the time Santa Claus will be at the museum. The last day we are open, he will be with us with surprise gifts for the first 20 children visiting us. We will be watching for you.
On Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. will be the annual Church Walk. It will start at the First Baptist Church, later it will go to the museum for cookies and drinks. We hope this will fill you with the Christmas spirit.
Historical fact: First Baptist Church
The First Baptist Church of Ironton, previously known as Storms Creek Baptist Church, was established in 1814 as an arm of the Ohio Baptist Church at Union Landing. On the last Saturday of July 1814, members gathered to build the first meetinghouse. It was a long, 25-foot square structure, built on the upper bank of Storms Creek just above the mouth of Rachel’s Cree, in what is now west Ironton.
