Shawnee State Park not letting winter stop events

Shawnee State Park will offer the following naturalist programs in December:

Sat. Dec. 6, 2008

Hike to Buzzards Roost at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve. This National Natural Landmark 400 feet above the Ohio Brush Creek Valley reveals a magnificent view. The trail is moderate 3 miles round trip. Pack a lunch if you like. Meet at the Shawnee Lodge at 10 a.m. Wear comfortable boots and dress in layers.

Christmas Bird Count. Meet at the Lodge Dining room for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Come along on an auto tour through scenic Adams County birding and taking in some historical sites. There is a $5 fee which goes to National Audubon Society. (Free for children) Bring binoculars and cameras if you wish.

Sat. Dec. 20, 2008

Hike to Raven Rock Nature Preserve with the Shawnee Nature Club. Enjoy the view from the cliff top aerie featured in the mural at Shawnee Lodge. Be prepared for a near vertical 500 foot ascent from the Ohio River Valley. Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good tread. Bring along your walking stick. Not suggested for those with heart, lung or joint problems. Meet at West High School Parking Lot across from the Preserve at 10 a.m.

Christmas Bird Count. $5.00 fee goes to National Audubon Society. Meet at Bob Evans 7 a.m. if you wish to eat, we depart at 8 a.m. Dress for cool weather, bring extra boots and socks. Bring binoculars or cameras if you wish.
