Fairland alumni hoops game set for Friday

It’s been a tradition for at least three decades. A sort of class reunion and holiday homecoming.

It’s the annual Fairland High School Alumni basketball tournament.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving former graduates of the high school get together for friendly, fun games of regulation basketball with professional referees officiating.

Starting at 6 p.m. will be teams made up of what Evan Hall, one of the participants, calls “the older guys.” That’s for anyone who graduated before 1990.

Then at 7 p.m. is the game for those who graduated after 1990.

“It kind of gets everybody back together,” Hall said. “A lot of the graduates have moved away but are back in town for Thanksgiving. It is almost like a reunion. There are a couple of my buddies I see only at this game.”

For years Fairland teacher Bob Lewis ran the tournament. Now it’s Ernie Hall III and Adam Alt.

“We do a $10 donation per player and that goes into the alumni fund,” Hall said. “We use that fund to pay for officials and a janitor and any type of upkeep. Our goal is someday to get enough for a scholarship for a Fairland grad going to Ohio.”
