Once the Chesapeake Lady Panthers went back, they began to move forward.

The Lady Panthers went back to their old way of playing in the second half and beat the St. Joseph Female Flyers 68-35 Monday.

Chesapeake led just 29-17 at the half, then exploded in the third quarter and outscored the Female Flyers 26-7 and coasted to the win in their season opener.

“We were all over the place defensively the first half. We pressured where we didn’t need to pressure. We went back to our base defense in the second half and did much better,” said Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue.

Sarah Mayo hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake began to pull away.

Courtney Heffner had 12 of her 13 points in the second half for the Lady Panthers. Mayo finished with a game-high 23 points.

“Courtney Heffner and Sarah Mayo really stepped it up,” said Gue. “It was a good team effort.”

Katie Hacker scored 19 points to lead the Female Flyers (0-2).

Chesapeake hosts Gallipolis Thursday.

Greenup County 42, Rock Hill 13

LLOYD, Ky.— The offense just didn’t work.

The Rock Hill Redwomen struggled with their offense as they fell to the Greenup County Lady Musketeers 42-13 Monday in their season opener.

“We got good looks, we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” said Rock Hill coach Matt Fulks.

“We didn’t play bad defensively, but we missed some easy shots and 10 free throws. It might have just been first game jitters.”

Rock Hill visits St. Joseph on Monday.
