It was a numbers game.

Mercedes Crockrel outscored the entire Fairland Lady Dragons team, and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers defense forced almost as many turnovers as Fairland points.

All those numbers together produced a 92-29 Ironton win Thursday night.

Crockrel scored a career-high 32 points and the defense forced 28 turnovers as the Lady Tigers won for the second time in as many tries this season.

“Mercedes had a nice game all-around, and we played well defensively again,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham. “Fairland is strong inside, so we knew we had to keep them out of the lane and off the boards.”

Speaking of numbers, Ironton dressed only eight players with one of those a junior varsity player with only one eligible quarter.

Fairland (0-1) was also missing a player. Point guard Mackenzie Rucker did not make the trip due to an illness.

Among the 28 turnovers were 20 steals. Alex Taylor and Brea Tackett had five each. Ironton held Fairland to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.

Crockrel scored 12 points in the first quarter as Ironton took a 19-6 lead. She had 12 more points in the second quarter as the lead grew to 44-13 at the break.

Lorna Ceaser scored 11 points and Tackett 10 including a pair of 3-pointers as Ironton outscored Fairland 29-8 in the third quarter to lead 73-21.

Crockrel had 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with her point explosion.

Tackett scored 19 points while Ceaser had 15 points and nine rebounds. Janie Morris and Taylor had eight rebounds each as Ironton dominated the glass 46-to-16.

Lauren Phillips had seven points and four rebounds for the Lady Dragons in their opener.
