He is the longest serving mayor South Point has had — more than 30 years in fact.

Now Mayor Bill Gaskin may be lauded for his public service by having a bridge named in his honor.

His daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Ray and Laura Hazelett began in earnest a little more than two years ago to name the Solida Road overpass crossing U.S. 52 for their father “because of all the things he has done to make South Point a nicer place to live,” Hazelett said.

“This is a nice place to live and my daddy helped do that.”

The ladies have the approval of the village council and Lawrence County Engineer’s Office. The Lawrence County Commission signed off on it Thursday.

The Fayette Township trustees must also approve the idea. Since the road is maintained by the Ohio Department of Transportation, state officials will get the final call.

Gaskin said he appreciates the honor.
