The temperatures were cold on Saturday, but that didn’t stop the Coal Grove Lady Hornets from heating up in a hurry.

Coal Grove jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 74-19 romp of the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets.

“We played okay on defense. We were aggressive to the ball,” said Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller.

“We know Wellston is very young and we were able to take advantage of their inexperience.”

Jordyn Cox led Coal Grove with 30 points. Chelsea Delong scored 15 points and Danielle Carpenter added 10.

Cox scored 18 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove (2-1) bolted to a 24-2 lead.

Cox began dishing out assists in the second quarter and Delong picked up in that area as she scored 11 points as the lead grew to 46-11 at the half.

The defense held Wellston to only one point in the third quarter and Cox scored 10 more to extend the lead to 65-12.

Miller emptied his bench in the fourth quarter.

In the junior varsity game, the Lady Hornets won 26-18 as Kim Hanshaw scored six and Ashley Goad five.
