Horoscopes entertain, if not insightful

I’ve never been much of a person for the supernatural.

Although I consider myself an open-minded person, I simply cannot make myself believe in ghosts, obscure “energy forces” and little green people from far away places.

Several programs on television show teams of people who track down ghosts or spirits with odd electronic devices and the like. Well, I’m just not buying it.

I was interested in a fortune teller a few years ago. I was looking for a different kind of story on the NCAA Tournament, so I asked her who was going to be in the Final Four and wrote about her predictions.

She gave me her choices, but kind of hedged a little. I asked her how she came up with the teams and she said it was all about the “feeling space.”

It was a drawn out explanation that basically means one’s initial, gut instinct. She picked some of the top teams in the tournament to make it, which led me to believe the feeling space could be influenced by a team’s seed in the tournament.

Call me a skeptic.

But one thing that I do enjoy is reading a daily horoscope even though I do not subscribe to their actual effect. Not that I believe any of it will influence my day, but I just like the idea that someone believes they can predict my fate based on the alignment of the stars.

For example, my horoscope for Wednesday said: “Being attracted to beauty does not mean that you are shallow. It makes you romantic!”

Yes! I knew it, despite what my former love interests might say! That’s me, Mr. Romantic. Good grief.

It continued … “You have an artist’s temperament, no matter what your occupation may be. Today you bring your refined aesthetic sense and raw emotional power to bear on whatever issue is most pressing.”

Man, that is deep.

I must have used my refined aesthetic sense and raw emotional power to do what was most pressing, such as cleaning out my garage. My raw aesthetic sense must have told me there was too much junk in there.

My horoscope for today is a little more difficult.

“Although you may be heading for a showdown, it’s too soon to turn a minor disagreement into a more major conflict.”

Hmmmm.

“Even if you are being pressured to take a side, be non-committal. Keeping your options open now is the smartest thing to do.”

Well, I certainly want to do the smart thing. So, OK then, I’ll keep my options open!

What’s good for me in this type of entertainment is that my birthday is on Feb. 19, which means I am on the cusp of Aquarius and Pisces. And because I supposedly have some characteristics of Aquarius, that means I can have double the fun!

Perhaps anyone who believes strongly in such things can analyze the characteristics of people with those signs and then realize why I’m writing this column and why I don’t believe in that sort of “science.” I suspect I’ll hear from a few believers who will disagree with me and try to straighten me out on why astrological signs are good barometers for human behavior.

In the meantime, I’m just going to trust my feeling space.
