Going into Saturday’s game, Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue had his defense pointed in the direction of Green’s Ashlee Runyon and Adrianne Blankenship.

The Lady Panthers’ defense went the right way as they held the duo in check and posted a 55-35 win.

“The key was Allison Chapman shutting down Runyon and (Courtney) Heffner did a great job on Blankenship,” said Gue. “(Blankenship) got six of her points in the fourth quarter when Heffner wasn’t in the game.”

While the defense did its job, Sarah Mayo scored 13 points to lead a balanced offense. Amanda Ruffner and Bennett scored 12 each and eight different players scored.

“Bennett did a great job on the glass. She took care of the boards,” said Gue.

“We got great production out of our bench. Cassie Rucker did a great job on their big girl inside. And Ruffner and Bennett did a good job on the break getting in position to score.”

Blankenship finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Bobcats (3-2).

Lauren Jones led Green with 11 rebounds.

“Chesapeake was an athletic team. They ran the floor well,” said Green coach Dale Royse.

“We didn’t play well. We stood around early.”

Mayo scored six points in the first quarter as the Lady Panthers jumped out to a 17-7 lead.

Bennett and Ruffner had four each in the second stanza and the defense held Green to four points as the lead grew to 29-11 at the break.

Bennett got six more in the third quarter before Gue began turning to his bench.

“Green has a good team and coach (Dale) Royse has done a good job. They just didn’t have a lot of depth,” said Gue. “Our defensive intensity the last couple of games has been good. It’ll make a difference if we guard well.”
