Helen Lenore Mapes, 80, of Ironton, formerly of Ashland, Ky., died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Jo-Lin Health Care Facility. She was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Carter County, Ky., the daughter of the late Charles and Lula Kaiser Mapes. She was a retired teacher for the Lawrence County school system with 38 years of service, was a former member of the OEA, was a graduate of Marshall College and was of the Episcopal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Oneida Howerton and Delores Serena. She is survived by a nephew, Jeff Serena, and his wife, Sharon of Huntington, W.Va.; and a great niece, Sarah Serena of Huntington. There will be no visitation. A private memorial service is scheduled and burial will be at a later date. Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
