Hot hands and cold feet.

The Southern Tornadoes had the early hot hand and the St. Joseph Flyers appeared to have cold feet as they failed to adjust. The results gave Southern a 62-39 win Tuesday in the first annual Ironton Classic.

Bryan Harris had the hot hand as he drained four 3-pointers in the first quarter to give Southern a 15-6 lead.

Chad Harvey scored all six of the Flyers’ points.

“We didn’t do a good job adjusting to him. We should be smart enough to recognize a hot shooter and not let him set and shoot. We just stood and watched,” said Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan.

Tanner Riley drained a trifecta to get the Flyers within 20-12 with 3:20 left in the half, but that was as close as St. Joseph would get the rest of the game.

Trailing 29-12 at the half, the Flyer went on a 5-0 run to start the second half as Caleb Blackburn scored all five points and it was 32-19.

Harvey’s layup at the 4:19 mark had the Flyers down 34-23 but Southern scored seven unanswered points to close the quarter and take a 43-24 lead.

Harvey led the Flyers (4-2) with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

“You can’t get past the start we had,” said Sheridan. “But we’re starting to do some things better. Some of the other guys are starting to put the ball in the basket. We know when we walk in the gym teams are going to gang up on Chad and try to take him away,” said Sheridan.

Harris finished with 26 points including 19 in the first half. He was 5 of 8 from behind the arc.

Weston Roberts added 18 points for Southern (4-0).
