When the Coal Grove Hornets lost their point guard, they lost their edge.

Eric Edens went down with an ankle injury early in the second quarter and didn’t come back until the third quarter, thus enabling the Menifee County Wildcats to beat the Hornets 54-51 in the championship game of the Dr. Paulus Heart of Champions Tournament.

The Hornets were only able to score four points during his absence and were guilty of seven turnovers.

“The difference in the game was when Edens went down. You can see what happened,” said Hornets coach Randy Ward.

Wayne Sparks scored five of his eight points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 17-12 lead.

But Menifee used 3-pointers by Blake Prewitt and David Meeks to outscore the Hornets 17-4 in the second quarter to take a 29-21 halftime lead.

Devin Monnier got six points in the third quarter as Coal Grove regained the lead at 40-38.

But Menifee rallied to outscore Coal Grove4 16-11 in the fourth quarter.

David Meeks and Cody Peck scored 11 points each for Menifee (7-5). Prewitt had nine points and five blocked shots.

Coal Grove is now 2-4 with all their losses by three points or less.

Raceland beat Boyd County 75-60 in the consolation game.

Prewitt was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Teammates Patrick Greene, Blake Greene and Cody Peck were all-tournament.

Edens, Monnier and Evan Ferguson were selected all-tournament for the Hornets.

Also named all-tournament were Cody Barker and Tyler Boyles of Raceland and Boyd County’s Trevor Hall.

Individual awards were:
