The Fairland Dragons had a breakdown, but coach John McClung didn’t call for a psychiatrist. In fact, he welcomed it.

The Dragons began to break down the Marietta press in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 57-53 win Saturday in a game played at Marietta College.

“We started breaking them down and getting to the basket and getting some easy baskets. (Matt) Bloomfield started breaking them down and that’s when he got his assists,” said McClung.

The win was the third in a row for the Dragons (4-3) and it was the first loss for Marietta (3-1).

“We hadn’t beat a solid team and we challenge them,” said McClung.

Cole Hatfield had 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds to lead the Dragons. Tyler Godby scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds while Evan Salyers grabbed six rebounds.

“Cole was consistent throughout. He willed us to win. We got great minutes out of Evan Salyers. He rebounded and played a great second half,” said McClung.

“Chad Fisher did a good job off the bench guarding for us against (Anthony) Tabler who didn’t score in the fourth quarter, and we got a great effort from Tyler. He didn’t come out of the game.”

Hatfield and Godby scored five each in the first quarter and the game was tied 15-15.

Each team got 13 points in the second quarter with Godby scoring six more to make it 28-28 at the break.

Fairland was just 1-of-10 from the field in the third quarter and fell behind 38-33, but Hatfield got 10 points in the fourth quarter and the Dragons converted 9 of 141 from the foul line to rally for the win.

“We survived the third quarter and got to the foul line in the fourth quarter,” said McClung.

Evan Brockmeirer had 15 points and Zane Eschbaugh 13 to lead Marietta.
