The St. Joseph Flyers found their own bailout system.

After losing the lead in the fourth quarter, Pat Gagai scored nine points in the fourth quarter to rally the Flyers past the Symmes Valley Vikings 60-54 Tuesday.

St. Joseph trailed by three points with three minutes to play when Gagai hit a pair of trifectas and converted 3-of-4 from the line down the stretch to rescue the Flyers.

“If we don’t get that, we end up losing the ball game,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan about Gagai’s scoring burst.

“All the guys on the bench gave us some good, solid minutes. Joseph Unger gave us some strong minutes that we really needed.”

Payton Blair and Chad Harvey combined for nine points as St. Joseph took a 15-12 first quarter lead.

Harvey had eight more in the second quarter as the Flyers took a 34-25 halftime lead.

But the Vikings cut the deficit to 44-42 at the end of the third quarter before coming back to take the lead in the fourth quarter.

“We were up at halftime and (Symmes Valley) came out and just got after us,” said Sheridan. “We got a couple of stops late in the fourth quarter and that was big. We maintained our composure which was a good sign for us.”

Harvey led the Flyers (4-3) with 23 points, six rebounds and two assists. Gagai finished with 13 points, Caleb Blackburn had six rebounds, and Blair had nine points, three assists and five steals.

Kris Tibbs led the Vikings (2-3) with a game-high 24 points. Josh Craft scored 16.
