CHESAPEAKE — Kyle Webb was on fire, so Lukas Morris turned firefighter.

Webb put on one of the most phenomenal shooting displays in the first half, but Morris’ defensive effort in the second half took it away as the Ironton Fighting Tigers beat the Chesapeake Panthers 67-58 Tuesday.

Webb hit his first seven shots and scored Chesapeake’s first 26 points of the game. But he managed just six points in the second half as Ironton rallied from a 32-30 deficit.

“That was the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever seen,” Ironton coach Mark LaFon said of Webb’s scoring performance.

“But as great as it was, you knew he couldn’t keep it up. We were fortunate to still be in the game. We made some adjustments and all we had to do was sit down and play some defense.”

Morris did play defense as he held Webb to 2-for-11 shooting in the second half. Webb was 9-of-10 in the first quarter with three shots from behind the arc as Chesapeake went up 21-18.

“Coach just told me to play him straight up. One time he told me that (Webb) doesn’t touch the ball,” said Morris. ‘I just tried to stay on him.”

Ironton (6-2) took its first lead at 24-23 on a layup by Dustin Green off a steal by Tommy Waginger with 5:22 left in the half. A layup by Johnathon Schweickart made it 26-23, but Webb hit another trey and the game was tied.

Nathan Copley’s layup at the 4:07 mark was the first basket for Chesapeake other than Webb and it was 28-26. A layup by Trent Saunders gave the Panthers a 32-30 halftime lead.

LaFon was whistled for a technical going into the locker rooms at the break and Copley hit a free throw to start the second half.

But Tim Kochendoerfer followed up his own missed shot and Erin Edens’ layup gave Ironton a 34-33 lead.

Webb’s 3-pointer put the Panthers up for the last time at 36-34. Ironton went on a 6-0 run as Kochendoerfer got four points in the spurt and it was 40-36.

The Fighting Tigers went on a 10-0 run capped by Travis Elliott’s tip-in and they held their biggest lead at 50-39. Peter Hintz hit a 3-pointer to get the Panthers within 50-42 at the end of the quarter.

Chesapeake got within 54-48 on a 12-foot bank shot by Hintz with 3:11 left, but that was as close as they would get.

Green made a layup for a 60-51 lead and was 5-of-6 at the foul line as Ironton converted 7-of-8 over the final 1:21 to seal the win.

Green led Ironton with 21 points. Kochendoerfer had 11 points and nine rebounds while Morris and Schweickart scored 10 each. Morris and Edens had eight rebounds each.

Copley had 16 points — 14 in the second half — and Saunders eight rebounds for Chesapeake (4-2).
