Alton R. Markins, 82, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky. The Lawrence County, Ohio native was born Nov. 22, 1926, the son of the late George W. and Lillian Mays Markins. He is survived by his wife, Maxine M. Addis Markins, whom he married Aug. 29, 1948.
Mr. Markins was a very loving husband and father dedicated to his family. He was a 1944 graduate of Pedro High School and a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a former senior lab analyst with Marquette/Lone Star Cement Company for 44 years, retiring in 1988. Mr. Markins has been a very active member of Central Christian Church since he joined in 1956. He was a deacon and a member of the church board and former trustee. He was a faithful Food Pantry volunteer, a member of the 3 Score and More and the 50/50 Sunday School class. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., American Legion and a former AARP volunteer. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds, Ohio State Buckeyes and Ironton Tigers fan, and loved gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Massie and Imogene Large; and four brothers, William “Wid” Markins, Alex Markins, George R. Markins, and Harry Edward Markins
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law: George and Cheryll Markins of Lexington, KY, Jeff and Jan Markins of Chillicothe, and Eddie Markins of Ironton; seven grandchildren, Shanna Loewen of Overland Park, Kansas, Kelley Hodges of Plainview, Texas, Farrah Folson and Shayne Pearce both of Lexington, KY, Adam Markins and Andrea Markins both of Chillicothe, and Lathan Markins of Ironton; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marguerite Lehrke and Juanita Brunner both of Fairborn, OH
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Central Christian Church, with Minister Jim Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rites by V.F.W. Post 8850. Friends may call Saturday from 12-2 p.m. at the church. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Bob Clay, Tim Brunner, Kevin McCown, Ryan Markins, Brad Markins, Mike Poling, Joe Fletcher, Vernon Turvey, and Milton DePriest.
