CHESAPEAKE — State fire marshal investigators expect to be on the scene again today looking into a fire that destroyed a house in Chesapeake.
The fire broke out at approximately 2:45 p.m. Thursday at a white frame bungalow across from Chesapeake Elementary School on County Road 1.
Chesapeake-Union Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call and was assisted by the Proctorville Volunteer Fire Department. There were no reported injuries as firefighters battled the blaze in the frigid weather that has gripped the Tri-State. The structure was unoccupied and was a one and a half story building.
As of this morning investigators were unable to determine a cause or place of origin for the fire, according to Shane Cartmill of the state fire marshal’s office. Investigators stayed at the scene Thursday until approximately 6:30 p.m, Cartmill said. At that time they conducted interviews of those at the scene. They are scheduled to return this morning.
This was the second fire in 10 days in Chesapeake. On Jan. 5, a late night blaze destroyed the two-story structure that housed the Deeds Family Vision Care and three upstairs apartments. The building was also on County Road 1.That fire was ruled accidental and caused by something being left accidentally on the stove in one of the apartments.
That structure was deemed a total loss. All three apartments had been unoccupied. There were no injuries at the fire as well.
