Jordyn Cox used a career game for an exclamation point to a storied career.

Cox scored a career-high 37 points and thus eclipsed the 1,000-point career scoring milestone as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets beat the Fairland Lady Dragons 64-35 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Our whole program is very product of her. It’s a tremendous achievement,” Coal Grove coach Nick Miller said of Cox’s 1,000th career point.

Cox was aware she was nearing the milestone, but she had no idea how close she really was as the game continued.

“I knew I was close, but I didn’t think I’d get it tonight,” said Cox.

“It’s a great accomplishment to know you’ve actually done that, but I never worried about it that much.”

Cox had 27 points from the field and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the line.

Coal Grove (10-3, 4-1) took a 12-9 lead in the first quarter as Cox scored nine points. McMaster had five for Fairland.

Cox exploded for 14 points in the second quarter and Danielle Carpenter added four as the Lady Hornets opened up a 35-24 halftime lead.

Taylor Sexton scored seven points including a 3-pointer in the third quarter and Cox made six free throws as Coal Grove outscored Fairland 19-4 to build a 54-28 cushion.

Sexton finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Carpenter hauled down 17 rebounds and Chelsea Delong grabbed 12.

McMaster had 10 points and nine rebounds for Fairland (5-7, 1-4).
