HANGING ROCK — Doris J. Hopper, 79, of Hanging Rock, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at her residence.
The Wayland, Ky., native was born Dec.28, 1929, the daughter of the late Raleigh and Jettie Miller Oakley. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Vic Hopper Sr., whom she married Sept. 2, 1948.
Mrs. Hopper was a 1948 graduate from a Wayland, Ky., high school. She was a former employee of Tiptons, Big Boy, and The S.S. Kresge Company in Ironton for many years. She was a member of the Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years, where she was a Sunday School teacher, church secretary, and loved singing with the choir. Mrs. Hopper was also a former Cub Scout Leader and enjoyed flowers and fishing with her husband.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Teresa Ann Hopper and Lisa Marie Hopper; three brothers, Bobby Oakley, Mason Oakley, and Rephard Oakley and a sister, Naomi Caudill.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Vic Hopper, Jr. of Hanging Rock; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Gloria Hopper of Ironton; a son, Jack Hopper of Ironton; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Donna Hopper of Hecla; 15 grandchildren, Vicki Wiley, Jimmy Hopper, Michael Hopper, Amy White, Jenny Rowe, Jackie Hopper, Bryan Hopper, Joshua Hopper, Katelyn Hopper, Kayla Bruce, Amber McClure, Jacob McClure, Christopher LaMarque, Michael Jenkins, and Joshua Jenkins; 13 great grandchildren; a brother, Weldon Oakley of Sidney; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Christine and Bill Oney of Sumter, S.C., and Ann Fyffe of Marion.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Clell Elliott and Pastor Lennie Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Haverhill Cemetery. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and after 1 p.m. Sunday at the church. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
