Eastern topples Vikings

Things went from bad to worse for the Symmes Valley Vikings.

A scoring burst by Eastern was the first problem, and the loss of leading scorer Kris Tibbs compounded the problem as the Vikings lost 66-49 to the Eagles on Saturday night.

“We were in the game and then we had one of those major breakdowns on defense right at the end of the first half,” said Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

“We started out doing okay when Tibbs went down, but it began to take its toll on both ends of the floor.”

Tibbs scored six points in the first quarter and the game was tied 13-13.

The Vikings were trailing 18-16 when Eastern hit a pair of 3-pointers. The Vikings came back to make two baskets and trailed 25-20, but the Eagles went on an 11-2 run to end the half and take a 36-22 lead into the locker room.

Tibbs went out in the first minute of the third quarter and did not return until late in the fourth quarter.

Hunter Johnson had six points in the third quarter as the Vikings cut the deficit to 47-37.

But Kelly Winebrenner scored eight points in the fourth quarter including a pair of 3-pointers as the Eagles began to pull away.

The Vikings (5-8) were led by Tibbs with 13 points. Winebrenner had 18 points and Jake Lynch 17 to lead Eastern (7-5).
