Nathan Copley wasn’t a one-man show. It just seemed that way.
Copley scored a career-high 35 points as the Chesapeake Panthers beat the Wheelersburg Pirates 56-46 Saturday night.
Copley’s total included five 3-point goals and 12 free throws.
“We played pretty good. We didn’t let them get too many easy looks. We did a decent job on (Andrew) Stegman. He had 26 points, but eight came late in the game,” said Panthers coach Ryan Davis.
The Panthers (10-3) converted 21-of-24 from the line to just 2-of-4 for the Pirates, but 14 of the Chesapeake free throws came in the fourth quarter when Wheelersburg was forced to foul.
Copley scored 21 of his points in the first half as the Panthers took a 24-20 lead. Peter Hintz had the other three Chesapeake points.
Kyle Webb — who scored the team’s first 26 points in a game earlier this season — got all 12 of his points in the second half and Copley scored 14 more as the Panthers began to pull away in the fourth quarter.
Stegman was the only Pirate in double figures. Jordan Schankweiler added eight points for Wheelersburg (10-4).
