ASHLAND, Ky. — The woman whose suicide threat closed a bridge for a time Tuesday night is not a stranger to law enforcement, an Ashland police officer said.
Major Todd Kelley identified the woman as Cynthia Gonzales, 41, of Ashland.
“This is not the first time we have had interaction with her in that type of situation,” Kelley said. “Whatever her problems she feels the need to do herself harm.”
Authorities were able to talk her down from the bridge and she was involuntarily admitted to King’s Daughters Medical Center for a 72-hour period, Kelley said. Because she was admitted to a hospital under this circumstance, Kentucky law does not allow her to be charged with any crimes.
“We thought getting her help was more important than any criminal culpability,” Kelley said.
Ashland police and firefighters were alerted at 7:44 p.m. Tuesday that a woman had climbed onto the bridge and was threatening to jump. Authorities in Kentucky and Ohio closed the bridge while they talked to the woman and coaxed her into the bucket of a fire department ladder truck.
“It came to a good, safe conclusion for everyone,” Kelley said. “No one was injured.”
