The top scorers usually get the headlines, but it was the players who scored only a few or no points who made the difference for South Point.

The Pointers got key plays off the bench from Matt Button, Kevin Davis, Kyle Winkler and Greg Taylor to key a 58-54 upset win over the Chesapeake Panthers on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Matt Button, Kevin Davis, Kyle Winkler and Greg Taylor didn’t get a lot of points, but we got really good minutes. We couldn’t have won the game without their contributions,” said Pointers’ coach Gary Norris.

Winkler scored 11 points off the bench and Button hit a free throw with 11 seconds left that put the lead at four points and sealed the victory.

“Button’s free throw was really big,” said Norris.

Chase Kratzenberg scored 17 points and Ethan Prater had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pointers (9-7, 3-4).

Cody Taylor had six rebounds while Drew Lynd and Kratzenberg handed out four assists each. Winkler also had four rebounds.

Chesapeake’s Kyle Webb led all scorers with 35 points including five 3-pointers. Nathan Copley added 10 points.

“With Copley and Webb we knew what we had to do. Webb was shooting long-distance tonight. He was out there. He’s got a nice release on the ball and a nice touch. He’s just a shooter,” said Norris.

South Point took a 20-14 lead in the first quarter despite 13 points by Webb.

Chespeake got within 32-28 at the half and trailed 39-36 after three quarters.

Webb scored 11 more points in the fourth quarter, but the Pointers outscored the Panthers 19-18 to hold on for the win.

“It was an up and down kind of game, but we got off to a pretty good start and that was big for us,” said Norris.

Chesapeake fell to 13-4 and 6-2 in the OVC. The Panthers maintained their first place lead in the league race thanks to River Valley’s upset of Fairland.
