The Rock Hill Redmen did what they needed to do. The Coal Grove Hornets did more.
The Hornets used a strong shooting performance to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 52-41 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“You have to tip your hat to them. They hit some shots that killed us and they were contested shots,” said Rock Hill coach Adam Simpson.
“The defense was there. We played well enough to win. They just shot the ball really well.”
Devin Monnier did most of the shooting as he scored a game-high 20 points to go with five rebounds for the Hornets (9-8, 4-4).
Shannon Goodwin had eight points off the bench, Wayne Sparks grabbed seven rebounds, and Evan Ferguson had five rebounds and five assists, and Eric Edens had six assists.
“Rock Hill made us work for the ball and we did a good job not turning it over,” said Hornets’ coach Randy Ward.
Jeremy Blagg had 13 points and four assists for the Redmen (5-11, 2-6). Sam Cooke added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Monnier scored seven points as Coal Grove took a 12-8 first quarter lead.
Blagg got six points in the second quarter as Rock Hill closed to within 22-19 at the half.
Coal Grove opened up a 32-25 lead after three quarters as Monnier scored six more points.
