Two years ago this week, Ironton resident Thelma Mooney was murdered in her north Ironton home. Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey said finding the person responsible is still a high priority not only for his office but for state investigators who are helping with this case.

Both the IPD and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification continue a joint investigation and are making a renewed call for information.

“At the request of Ironton police, our personnel at BCI&I are assisting and taking a fresh look at this case,” Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray said. “It’s always possible that someone in Ironton saw something that seemed suspicious or out-of-place just before or just after this murder, but never thought it was important enough to tell police. Those recollections can be very important as the Ironton Police Department and our investigators review what is known about Mrs. Mooney’s death.

“They want to bring her killer to justice and bring some resolution to her family and the community.”

Carey agreed.

“We haven’t given up on this case,” he said. “We’ve been investigating it all along and we are trying our best.”

The BCI&I is frequently called to help local authorities process crime scenes and Carey said he plans to ask for additional assistance in the future from that agency’s investigators. He said having more investigators would put more manpower and resources into an investigation.

Mooney was found stabbed to death in her home Feb. 18, 2006.

Her grandson, Jason Mooney and his wife, Lisa, were arrested two weeks later.

The charges against Lisa Mooney were dropped a few months after her arrest. The charges against Jason Mooney were dismissed last summer after Lawrence County Prosecutor J.B. Collier Jr., said there was insufficient evidence to bring him to trial.
