Dragons set up showdown

The Fairland Dragons took care of business, and now they have an even bigger job ahead.

Fairland beat the Rock Hill Redmen 58-39 on Wednesday to fulfill their part of setting up a showdown for the Ohio Valley Conference championship at Chesapeake on Friday.

The Dragons are now 6-3 in the conference and must win to gain a share of the OVC title along with Chesapeake. The Panthers are 6-2 in the league.

Rock Hill didn’t make things easy for the Dragons. Brandon Klaiber scored eight points in the first quarter as the Redmen took a 10-5 lead.

But Matt Bloomfield got six points, Tyler Godby five and Chris Ward four in the second quarter as Fairland exploded for 23 points to take a 28-15 halftime lead.

“We started to get them to turn it over and once we didn’t that we got some easy basket,” said Fairland coach John McClung.

“We extend the floor and pressured them. We settled for too many 3s. We guarded with more pressure and worked the ball inside.”

The Dragons made just one-of-13 from behind the arc in the first half.

Cole Hatfield got seven points and Evan Salyers six as the Dragons extended their lead to 48-27 after three quarters.

Klaiber connected for seven more points in the fourth quarter, but Ward countered with six for the Dragons as they coasted to the win.

Ward led the Dragons (13-6) with 15 points Hatfield had nine points and six rebounds while Bloomfield added nine points and four assists. Godby grabbed 10 rebounds.

Klaiber scored 19 points and Jeremy Blagg eight for the Redmen (5-14, 2-7).
