There was no league title on the line, but this was a big win for the Coal Grove Hornets.

Coal Grove guaranteed itself of a winning season just two years after going winless as they edged the River Valley Raiders 46-42 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Hornets finished the regular season 12-8 and finished 5-5 in the OVC.

“That was a big win for our program. We’ve come a long way in two years. Hopefully this will get us going,” said Hornets’ coach Randy Ward.

Coal Grove led 10-7 after the first quarter and Devin Monnier had four points in the second quarter to help offset eight points by the Raiders’ Clayton Curnutte and it was 22-19 at the half.

River Valley cut the Hornets’ lead to 31-29 after three quarters. Edens had seven of Coal Grove’s nine points in the quarter.

Evan Ferguson scored six points in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove extended its lead to as many as nine points.

Curnutte banked in a couple of 3-pointers as he scored nine points but the Raiders’ rally came up short.

Coal Grove had three players in double figures as Edens and Ferguson scored 11 each and Wayne Sparks added 10. Edens also had eight rebounds and four assists while Ferguson grabbed five rebounds.

River Valley (7-12, 3-6) was led by Curnutte with 21 points.
