Two men accused in connection with the alleged rape of a teen-aged girl last month were arraigned Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court, as was one of three people indicted in connection with the stabbing of a Huntington, W.Va., cab driver.

Kyle Hayes, 19, of 106 Walnut St., Proctorville, pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree rape through his attorney, Roger Smith.

Judge D. Scott Bowling allowed a $50,000 surety bond set in a lower court to continue but also ordered an additional $50,000 own recognizance (OR) bond. The additional bond was requested by Assistant Lawrence County Prosecutor Jeff Smith but defense counsel Roger Smith said the additional bond was unnecessary since his client had shown up for hearings in municipal court without any trouble.

Bowling ordered Hayes to return to court March 18 for a pretrial conference.

Meanwhile, Michael C. “Chris” Fulks, 20, of 284 Private Drive 1285, Chesapeake, was arraigned on one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bowling set a $10,000 OR bond at scheduled a March 18 pretrial conference.

The alleged incident happened in the early morning hours of Jan. 3 in Rome Township. Authorities contend the 15 year-old girl was given alcohol prior to the alleged rape and that she and the two men knew each other.

Also Wednesday, Christopher D. Colburn, 24, of 284 Private Drive 1285, Chesapeake, was arraigned on one count of complicity to aggravated robbery and one count of complicity to tampering with evidence.

Judge Charles Cooper allowed bond set in a lower court to continue with electronic monitoring and ordered Colburn to stay away from his alleged victim.

Colburn was one of three people arrested in connection with the December 2008 stabbing of cab driver Walter “Corky” Asbury at the Exxon gasoline station on County Road 107 in Proctorville.

Brandi D. Davis, 20, of 7965 County Road 107, Proctorville, was arraigned last week on the same charges as Colburn and was given the same bond and conditions. Hale, 24, of Wayne County, is incarcerated in West Virginia and has yet to be arraigned on the Lawrence County charges of aggravated robbery, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and theft.
