UPPER TOWNSHIP – Firefighters from four separate departments were needed to contain a wind-fueled brush fire that burned more than 75 acres during the overnight hours.

The fire, located near U.S. 52 and Deep Cut Road, was well contained late this morning, according to Upper Township Fire Chief Jeff Scott. No property or homes were damaged in the blaze.

Scott said a few “hot spots” located in rugged and rocky terrain and out of the reach of firefighters on the ground would be put out later today with water drops by a pair of U.S. Forestry Service helicopters.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started when an Upper Township resident could not contain a fire he set to burn garbage and some wood. Winds, which were reported to be 15-20 miles-per-hour, spread the fire quickly, which Scott said, started at around 4:30 p.m.

Scott said that besides the wind, the fire was aided by an area filled with down brush due to clear-cut and a wide supply of honeysuckle.

Firefighters from Upper Township, Ironton, Coal Grove and the U.S. Forestry Service responded and also help set up back burns in setting up a perimeter to contain the fire and hinder its progress.
