Sisters sentenced for check scheme

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Two West Virginia sisters have been sentenced for using bogus checks to defraud more than 35 people and businesses in three counties.

A federal judge sentenced 40-year-old Robin Renee Cleek of Hurricane to 10 months in prison Monday. Cleek’s sister, 35-year-old Tara Dawn Hammack of Hurricane, received two months in prison and six months on home confinement after she’s released.

Both women pleaded guilty to wire fraud in November.

U.S. Attorney Charles Miller’s office said the sisters passed checks on a closed account to businesses and people in Kanawha, Cabell and Putnam counties. The scheme cost the victims more than $14,000 overall.
