Dragons claim Early Bird relays

PROCTORVILLE — It was a nice win, but coach Jon Buchanan wants the win in March to begin a march through the track season.

Fairland came out of the box fast as the Dragons won their Early Bird Relays Saturday in the eight-team field.

“I was happy with the effort and it was a good first meet, but it’s just March,” said Buchanan. “If we want to win in May, we have to do more. We judge ourselves off of OVC, district, regional and state performances.”

Fairland’s performances gave them 103 points while runner-up Ironton racked up 76 points. River Valley was third with 62. South Point had 60, Huntington (W.Va.) 55, Rock Hill 41, Chesapeake 36 and Wayne (W.Va.) 16.

The Dragons got some strong performances on Saturday that gives Buchanan hope for a good season.

The pole vault tandem of Kyle Kincaid and Logan Froehlich won with a height of 24-feet, one-quarter inch. Chad Fisher, Kenny Smith, Tanner Sowards and Brandon Nelson had a winning distance of 34-8 in the long jump.

Winning the sprint medley with 1:42 time were Aaron Adkins, Jevon Hayes, Matt Bloomfield and Smith.

Hayes, Aaron Ward, Eddie Adkins and Bloomfield had a 3:44 time to win the 4×400.

Kincaid’s 13-foot, one-fourth inch in the pole vault was a personal best.

Smith, a freshman, was part of three wins and also a second place finish.

Ward had good performances in the hurdles, 4×200 and 4×400. Bloomfield was strong in the 4×200, 4×400 and sprint medley while Kyle Taubenheim had a big day in the 4×800 and distance medley.

“We have a good mix of veterans and young guys at Fairland. We just have to remember that nobody cares what we’ve done in the past. We’re going to be judged on how we do this year. Nothing else matters at this point,” said Buchanan.

“We didn’t run tremendously fast times and I think our guys know it, but it was nice to see our guys compete.”

Ironton coach Greg Cronacher was also pleased with the runners he took to the meet.

“Every kid who showed up today came to play. Major tweaked something, Robert (Bishop) got sick, and Ryan Sias tweaked his leg, but they fought through it,” said Cronacher.

“I was pleased with our effort. This group likes to compete.”

Ironton won the high jump with a combined height of 12-2 from Lukas Morris (6-4) and Ryan Sias (5-10).

The 4×1600 relay team of Pierce Reeves, Erin Edens, Gary Monroe and Adam Stumbo won with a 20:26 time. The 4×800 team of Dustin Moritz, Reeves, Monroe and Stumbo had a 9:12 winning time and the distance medley team of Reeves, Monroe, Stumbo and Edens won with a 14:01 clocking.

Ironton’s discus tandem of Ben Wells and Tom Saul were second with a distance of 222-11.5. The 4×1200 relay Major Brice, Jon Monnig, Tres Wilkes and Sias was runner-up at 46.6 seconds.
