CHESAPEAKE — Travis Zimmerman was in midseason form. And it was only the first game.

Zimmerman gave up just three hits in six innings, struck out 12 and walked four as the Chesapeake Panthers beat the Green Bobcats 3-1 Monday to open the season.

“Travis did a pretty good job pitching. We didn’t do that good of a job on the hitting side but our pitching was good,” said coach Joe Waugh.

Matt Clarke grounded out to drive in a run in the top of the third inning to give Green a 1-0 lead, but Chesapeake got three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Matt Angle, Shane Pelfrey and Zimmerman all singled to tie the game. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Zach Harris grounded out for the go-ahead run. Colton Lindsey singled home an insurance run.

The Panthers play at Portsmouth West Tuesday.
