An Ironton man arrested late last week in connection with the shooting of Pedro man was arraigned Monday in Ironton Municipal Court.

“Do you want an attorney?” Collins asked. Massie nodded.

“Can you afford an attorney?” Collins queried. Massie shook his head slightly.

“I’ll appoint Warren Morford,” Collins told Massie before setting bond at $100,000. Massie must return to court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

Massie is accused of shooting William J. Scherer, 37, Thursday afternoon. Scherer was shot in the neck and once in the left shoulder with a .25-caliber handgun. Scherer was taken by helicopter to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., but has since left the hospital.

Authorities said the shooting occurred on County Road 4 near its intersection with County Road 15 in Elizabeth Township. Scherer reportedly told Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies he and Massie had argued shortly before the shooting. Though wounded, Scherer was able to drive his truck to Tipton’s Mini-Mart on State Route 93 and call for help.

Massie was arrested later at the home of his parents. He remains in the Lawrence County Jail.
