CHESHIRE — It’s not the times you hit, but the timely hits.

The Coal Grove Hornets came up with some clutch hitting — especially from the bottom of the batting order — in a 5-1 Ohio Valley Conference win Thursday over the River Valley Raiders.

“We hit the ball hard but we didn’t hit it hard consistently and we left the bases loaded a few times. But we got the hits when we needed,” said Hornets’ coach John Jones.

“And again we had a good pitching and good defense. The only error was a throwing error.”

Shannon Goodwin provided the good pitching with a four-hitter. He struck out eight and walked two.

The Hornets got a run in the second inning when Jake Murphy and Jared Eldridge walked, Mark Davidson reached on an error to load the bases, and Rye Goodwin walked to force in a run.

Coal Grove went up 3-0 in the third inning.

Shannon Godwin singled, Murphy walked, and Scott Harbolt had an RBI single. Eldridge was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Davidson had a run-scoring single.

River Valley got a run in the fourth, but the Hornets got two insurance runs in the seventh.

Shannon Goodwin singled, Eldridge walked and Davidson singled for a run. Rye Goodwin then singled home Eldridge.
