SOUTH POINT — Josh Esque’s favorite number is “zero.”

That’s the number of his Esque allowed as he threw a no-hitter to lead the South Point Pointers to a 10-1 win over the River Valley Raiders in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.

Esque struck out seven and walked three in tossing his masterpiece.

“Josh pitched well on the mound and he also did it with his bat. He had a heck of a game,” said Pointers’ coach Marty Patrick.

Esque drove in three runs. Kyle Winkler also had a hit and two RBIs while Kyle Dickess had the other South Point hit and drove in a run.

South Point (2-2) hosts Coal Grove Wednesday in a league game.

COAL GROVE — Unearned runs still count.

The Fairland Dragons had two errors and the Coal Grove Hornets seven as the game produced just three earned runs. But it also produced nine total runs as the Dragons rallied past the Hornets 6-3 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Nathan Burcham struck out 14, walked one and gave up only two hits and one earned run to get the win. The Hornets’ Wayne Sparks struck out nine, walked four, and gave up just two earned runs.

“Both pitchers threw really well. The defenses just didn’t back them up. You can’t give a good ball team like Fairland extra outs,” said Hornets’ coach John Jones.

Coal Grove got a run in the first inning when Rye Goodwin walked, Oakie Haynes reached on a fielder’s choice, and an out later Shannon Goodwin grounded out as Rye Goodwin scored.

The lead went to 3-0 in the fourth inning.

Shannon Goodwin singled, Seth Harbolt was hit by a pitch, both moved up on a wild pitch and a two-out wild pitch scored Goodwin. A throwing error on the play scored Harbolt.

Fairland tied the game with three runs in the fifth inning.

With one out, Zach Jordan reached on a misplayed fly ball, Cole Hatfield walked and Robbie Easterling had an RBI double. A throwing error scored Hatfield.

A dropped infield pop fly scored Easterling.

The Dragons took the lead with a run in the sixth when Matt Campbell and Jordan singled and Hatfield reached on an error.

Fairland got a pair of unearned runs in the seventh.

Godby walked, Zach Matasich singled and Javier Roe put down a sacrifice bunt. An error scored Godby and Jordan had a two-out run-scoring single.

Fairland (5-1, 3-0) goes to Rock Hill and Coal Grove (2-3, 2-1) visits South Point on Wednesday.
