Ironton can’t get by mistkes
JACKSON — There’s not eraser big enough to wipe out these mistakes.
Some baserunning mistakes and four errors proved costly as the Ironton Fighting Tigers lost a 4-2 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game Thursday to the Jackson Ironmen.
“We ran ourselves out of a couple of scoring chances,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck. “We just didn’t play that well in the field. We need to string some games together and get some work.”
Ironton’s mistakes saddled Ethan Preston with a tough-luck loss. Preston struck out eight, walked four, allowed six hits and gave up just two earned runs.
Each team got a run in the first inning.
Ironton scored when Josh Pancake singled, moved up on a ground out and scored on Geoff White’s base hit.
Jackson got its run on a hit by Kyle Newsom, an error, and Austin Bryant’s two-out hit.
The Ironmen took the lead with an unearned run in the third inning and then Ironton tied the game in the top of the fifth.
Taylor Barker singled, Johnathon Schweickart laid down a sacrifice bunt, Pancake walked and Tommy Waginger was safe on an error.
But Jackson came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on two singles, a walk and a dropped fly ball.
Pancake had two of Ironton’s six hits.
The loss dropped Ironton to 3-4 and 2-3 in the SEOAL. The Fighting Tigers play at Russell, Ky., Friday and in a doubleheader at Chesapeake on Saturday.
