COAL GROVE — Until Rock Hill gets everyone on the same page on offense, they’ll just let Josh Malone do his thing.

Malone pitched a seven-hitter as the Rock Hill Redmen beat the Coal Grove Hornets 7-1 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Josh threw a real good ball game and we scored when we had to. We need to get everybody hitting at the same time,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral.

Coal Grove coach John Jones said his young team is still making mistakes from inexperience.

“We didn’t hit the ball real well,” said Jones. “We spread our hits out and didn’t get them when we needed them. And we dropped some fly balls.”

Rock Hill took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Malone singled, Shane Russell beat out an infield hit and Mitchell Davenport singled off the fence to load the bases.

Jeremy Blagg was safe on a fielder’s choice as Malone scored. Cody Massie beat out an infield hit to score Russell.

The lead went to 4-0 in the third inning when Davenport was safe on an error and Massie cranked a two-run homer.

The Redmen added two more runs in the fourth inning.

Russell walked, Blagg singled with one out and Massie singled to load the bases. Herbie Butterbaugh then delivered a two-run single.

Rock Hill’s final run came in the sixth when Massie got a base hit, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error and came home on Alex Bare’s sacrifice fly.

The Hornets got an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh when Oakie Haynes reached on an error, stole second and came home on a hit by Jake Murphy who was 3-4 on the day.

Rock Hill (5-1, 3-0) hosts River Valley in a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.

Coal Grove (2-4 2-2) visits South Point on Monday.
