The road to victory was rough, but the results were still what they wanted.

The St. Joseph Flyers were guilty of four errors but managed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the South Gallia Rebels 5-4 Thursday.

“We didn’t play well, but we won and that’s all that matters,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

The errors spoiled a solid pitching effort by Tanner Riley who went six innings striking out eight, walking two, allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Caleb Blackburn finished up for the win.

“Tanner pitched a really good game, we just didn’t make the plays behind him. He pitched well enough to get the win. He gave up two home runs, but we’re on a small field and they weren’t hit that hard,” said Bryant.

The Flyers went up 2-0 in the second inning when Riley walked, courtesy-runner Anthony Whaley stole second, T.J. Young was hit by a pitch, Cody Blackburn walked and Payton Blair had a two-run double.

The Rebels took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third on a solo home run by Brandon Harrison and a two-run shot by B.J. Stanley.

But the Flyers came back with two runs

Young was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved up on a wild pitch. Levi Hopkins walked and stole second and Blair hit his second two-run double.

South Gallia got an unearned run in the fifth to tie the game only to have the Flyers get the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Caleb Blackburn singled, stole second and came home on a base hit by Chad Harvey.

“Caleb and Chad are four-year starters and they clutched up. Chad came up with a big hit and that’s what we needed,” said Bryant.

Blair was 2-3 with two doubles and four RBI to lead the Flyers’ offense.

St. Joseph (6-0) hosts Hannan, W.Va., at 8 p.m. Friday.
