James R. Hurst, 72, of Ironton, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. The Greenup County, Ky. native was born Jan. 11, 1937, the son of the late Marshall and Susie Thacker Hurst. He is survived by his wife, Lennie Roach Hurst, whom he married March 14, 1960.
Mr. Hurst was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former burner at Friedmans of New Boston and a grave digger for Green Township.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Hurst.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons and five daughters-in-law, James Jr. and Jerri Hurst and Marshall and Sherry Hurst, all of Franklin Furnace, Jeffrey and Jill Hurst, Michael and Tammy Hurst, Rocky and Becky Hurst and Robert Hurst, all of Ironton; a daughter and son-in-law, Melody and David Mulkey of Ironton; 18 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Garnet Mollett Carver of Wheelersburg; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nellie Roach Hatfield and James of Huntington, W.Va., and Sally Roach and Dewey Smith of Hornbeck, La.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Chaffins officiating. Burial will follow in Haverhill Cemetery. Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 23.
