– A minor earthquake shook Lawrence County Friday morning resulting in rattled nerves but no reported structural damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the 3.4 magnitude quake occurred at 9:42 a.m. near Gallipolis. The epicenter is being show just north of SR 141 near Fairfield Centenary Rd.
Early indications by the USGS had the epicenter near Oak Hill in Jackson County, but following additional research, the agency determined the epicenter several miles to the east

Decatur resident Beverly Norris said the quake felt like the little shake you sometimes feel when an airplane flies past a house rattling the windows.

“All I felt was a little shake,” Norris said.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Geological Survey Friday’s tremor is the first earthquake centered in Gallia County since 1975 when a 3.5 magnitude quake hit.

The only recorded earthquake whose epicenter was located in Lawrence County was a 2.5 magnitude quake in 1995 and a 3.5-estimated magnitude earthquake in 1883.
