SOUTH POINT — Vernon A. Bennett, 66, of South Point, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, from injuries sustained in a house fire.
He was born Nov. 22, 1942, a son of the late Robert Bennett and Edna Stevens.
He had numerous positions in the Lawrence County area, including 12 years of service to the Ashland, Ky., community as a street sweeper and equipment operator for the Ashland Department of Streets and Sanitation. He was also a mechanic at the former Seven-Up Bottling Company of South Point. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Jenkins Bennett.
He is survived by four sons, Vernon Christopher Stevens and his wife, Jane, of Phoenix, Ariz., Darryl Lee Stevens and Dwayne Stevens of Ironton and Vincent Stevens and his wife, Sherry, of Ashland, Ky.; two daughters, Destiny Pennington and her husband Matthew of Burlington and Dion Shawn Williams of Lancaster, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In keeping with his wishes, he was cremated. Graveside rites will be 1:20 p.m. Thursday at Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Ronnie Tyree officiating. The funeral procession will leave Brown Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. The family asks that memorial donations be made in his memory directly to Brown Funeral Chapel to help with expenses.
