St.Joseph’s bats trigger 17-6 victory

CHESAPEAKE — Welcome back, bats.

St. Joseph’s offense returned as the Flyers parlayed 10 hits and 13 walks into a 17-6 win over the Coal Grove Hornets on Tuesday.

“The offense came to life in their third inning. Once we started scoring we just kept on going,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant. “Hopefully our offense back on track.”

Chad Harvey was 2-3 and Joey Basedow 2-4 to pace the Flyers’ offense. Harvey also pitched four of the five innings to get the win.

The Flyers got a run in the first inning when Harvey doubled, stole third base and scored on a passed ball.

Coal Grove got all its runs in the second inning.

Wayne Sparks walked, stole second and scored when Drew Jenkins reached on an error. Jared Eldridge had an RBI double, Mark Davidson walked and Rye Goodwin singled to load the bases.

Oakie Haynes was safe on a fielder’s choice, Aaron Conley was safe on an error as two runs scored and Jake Murphy had a run-scoring single.

The Flyers got two runs back in the bottom of the inning.

T.J. Young walked, stole second and took third on a throwing error. Joseph Unger walked, stole second, and then Basedow was safe on an error as a run scored and Unger came home on a passed ball.

St. Joseph took a 7-6 lead in the third.

Harvey walked, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error and came home on another error.

Tanner Riley, Pat Gagai and Young all walked to load the bases. Basedow singled home two runs and Young came home on a wild pitch.

The Flyers erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning on five singles and six walks. The first nine batters reached safely in the uprising.

Goodwin was 2-2 and Murphy 2-3 for the Hornets.

On Thursday, the Flyers will play Portsmouth Notre Dame at 5 p.m. on at Coal Grove. Admission is $5 as set by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. The OHSAA does not honor any passes.

Coal Grove (7-8) hosts Portsmouth West at 5 p.m. Friday in the Division III sectional tournament.
