Rally on the River seeks volunteers

IRONTON — There will be a Rally on the River meeting at the Ironton City Center, May 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in helping or volunteering with the Rally, are invited to attend if possible.

RC model air show to begin June 6

VINTON COUNTY —The Vinton County Pilots and Boosters Association will sponsor the first event of the summer on June 6 and 7 at the Vinton County Airport.

Called an RC Model Air Show, this two day event will feature remote controlled aircraft flown by members of four RC clubs from the region. There will also be a race track set up for radio controlled cars and trucks.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. each day.

Pilots from the Boosters Association will offer airplane rides at specific times each day and food will be available beginning with breakfast at 8 a.m. each day.

This is an AMA sanctioned event and all AMA flyers are welcome. There will be fun flying, precision flying, 3-D flying, helicopters as well as the RC cars and trucks.

The Vinton County Airport is located 6 miles north of McArthur on Airport Road just off St Rt. 93. There will be a gate fee of $10 per car.

24 jobs cut at Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — The publisher of The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington has eliminated 24 jobs.

Champion Publishing Inc. said Friday the reductions represent 15 percent of the work force at the Champion Industries Inc. subsidiary.

Marshall T. Reynolds, chairman and CEO of Champion, said the job cuts are in response to the “overall national economic situation” and its impact on the newspaper industry.

Reynolds said the cuts also were in response to an “evaluation of efficiencies” since the Huntington printing and office furniture company acquired The Herald-Dispatch in 2007.

The Herald-Dispatch has a daily circulation of about 26,000 and Sunday circulation of about 33,000.

Delta responds to travelers’ needs

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — In a response to the requests of the local traveling community, Delta Air Lines will be adding a third roundtrip Cincinnati flight to its daily schedule in Huntington.

Effective July 1, Delta service to Cincinnati will depart Huntington at 7 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 5:55 p.m.; and arrive back into Huntington at 11:59 a.m., 5:29 p.m., and 9:04 p.m.

All flights will be operated with the popular 50 seat Embraer passenger jet.

“We are pleased that Delta has responded to our needs and provided arrival and departure times that are optimal for our business travelers,” said Jerry Brienza, airport director. “Our passengers will now have the ability to depart from Huntington at various times throughout the day, and if need be, return back into Huntington the same day.

“Travelers will have greater access to connections throughout the Delta system, as well as to the international flight banks,” he said.
