Haynes qualifies for finals at regionals

LANCASTER — The competition was talented, but Coal Grove’s Daniel “Oakie” Haynes made it through the first test.

Haynes qualified for the finals in two events at the Division III regional track meet held Wednesday at Fairfield Union High School.

Haynes had a 22.98 time to place him third overall in the 200-meter dash preliminaries. He ran an 11.53 clocking to get seventh in the 100-meter dash preliminaries.

Coal Grove junior Aaron Dickess was the only local athlete to place on the day. Dickess was eighth in the discus with a toss of 136-3. The winning distance was 168-6 by Clay Harris of Newark Catholic.

Several athletes reached the finals but did not place.

Chesapeake’s Peter Hintz qualified for the long jump finals only to finish ninth at 19-2.75.

In the girls’ meet, Coal Grove’s Chelsea Delong made the shot put finals and ended in ninth place with a heave of 33-0.75.

The meet concludes on Friday with the top four finishers advancing to the state meet.
